Where do I find my Output Logs and Crash Dumps?

VRChat's Output Logs are text files that, by default, are written to your installation disk. These logs contain important diagnostic information about your device’s specifications and record client-level events that occur during your VRChat session.

You can use them to help troubleshoot issues you’re experiencing or share your Output Logs with our User Support Team for further investigation.

Output Logs are retained for 24 hours. Any logs older than 24 hours will be automatically deleted when VRChat is launched. User Support cannot manually restore your Output Logs.

Additionally, if VRChat crashes, your system may generate Crash Logs or Dump files. These files can provide deeper insights into what caused the crash and are especially useful when paired with your Output Logs during support requests. You can typically find these crash-related files in the same directory as your Output Logs or in a dedicated crash reports folder.

Output Logs on PC

If you play VRChat on a Windows PC, here's how you find your output logs.

Press the Windows Key + R. This will bring up the "Run" window:

Paste this into the text field:

%AppData%\..\LocalLow\VRChat\VRChat

Press ENTER or OK. This will bring up a Windows Explorer window:

In this screenshot, the output log is called:

output_log_2023-01-03_09-58-09.txt

Depending on your Windows settings, you may or may not see the "txt" extension.

The format is "output_log_yyyy-MM-dd_HH-mm-ss.txt", where the HH-MM-SS corresponds to the time at which that session of VRChat was started. Each individual output_log file corresponds to a session of VRChat launching.

It might be helpful to sort these files by "Date Modified" by clicking on that column in Explorer so you can see the most recent file.

Preparing to send the log

These logs can get quite large, but they compress very well. Let's ZIP up all the output logs we have.

While holding the Control key, click on each output_log text file. Let go of Control, and then right-click on any of the output logs you've selected. In the context menu, click "Send To". Then, click "Compressed (zipped) folder". A ZIP file will be created with the same name.

You can send this ZIP file. Usually, this is for a VRChat Support ticket, or a VRChat Trust and Safety ticket.

Output Logs on Meta Quest

By default, VRChat on Meta Quest only records error logs on new installations.

You can change this behavior based on your preference. To do so:

  1. Navigate to the Settings page of your Quick Menu
  2. Scroll down to the 'Debug' section
  3. You'll find 3 options here: Full, Errors Only or Off.

Your output logs can be found in the Documents/Logs folder located in the device root when you've connected your Quest to a PC.

Output Logs on Linux (via Proton)

VRChat on Linux via Proton is not directly supported unless you are using VRChat on the Steam Deck.

The location of this folder depends heavily on your distribution and how you've installed Steam.

You can usually find the Proton AppData folder for VRChat here:

~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/438100/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/VRChat/VRChat

If you installed Steam via FlatPak, it might be here:

~/.var/app/<flatpak-app-id>/(...?)/steamapps/compatdata/438100/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/VRChat/VRChat

Finding and attaching your Crash Dumps

If VRChat crashes, your system may also generate Crash Logs or Dump Files, which provide deeper technical information that can help identify what went wrong. These, combined with your Output Logs, are valuable when submitting a report to our User Support Team.

⚠️ Output Logs and Crash Dumps may contain personal information such as your computer username, hardware details, or IP address. Do not share these logs publicly. Only submit them through our official VRChat Support Form.

📝 Reporting a Crash

When submitting a crash report, include details like the following examples to help our team identify the issue faster:

  • Did the Unity error window appear?

  • Did the game hang or freeze until you manually closed it?

  • Did it crash on its own after hanging?

  • Was there looping audio just before or during the crash?

  • Are you using the Beta version of VRChat? If so, please mention this explicitly in your report.

🗂️ Including Crash Logs and Dumps (if available)

  • Check for error folders in: C:\Users\$USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\VRChat\VRChat

  • Do not send the VRChat_Data folder.

  • You may also find Dump Files here:  %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\CrashDumps

  • Look for files starting with VRChat.exe — only include them if requested, as they can be very large. If you do submit these, be sure to compress them using the same method described above.
