Here are some common reasons why other users may not hear you correctly in VRChat. Please follow the steps below based on your device.

Meta Quest

  1. Check Your Microphone
    • Before troubleshooting VRChat, confirm that your microphone works correctly in other applications on your Quest.
  2. Reinstall VRChat
    • Completely uninstall the VRChat app from your Quest device.
    • Restart your device by holding the power button and selecting Restart.
    • Reinstall VRChat from the Meta Quest Store.
  3. Allow Microphone Access
    • When launching VRChat for the first time after reinstalling, allow microphone access when prompted.

PC (PCVR & Desktop)

  1. Check Your Windows Microphone Settings
    • Right-click the speaker icon in the bottom-right of your screen.
    • Select Sound Settings or Recording Devices.
    • Ensure that your microphone is enabled
    • Verify that the input level responds when you speak.
  2. Unmute Yourself in VRChat
    1. VR Controllers:
      1. Press X (left-hand controller) to toggle mute/unmute.
      2. Open the Quick Menu and click the microphone icon (if crossed out, you’re muted).
      3. Quest Hand Tracking: Touch your thumb and ring finger together on your left hand to toggle mute.
    2. Desktop:
      1. Press V key on your keyboard to mute/unmute.
      2. Open the Quick Menu (Esc) and click the microphone icon.
    3. Gamepad:
      1. Press Y to mute/unmute.
  3. Adjust Microphone Level in VRChat
    • Open your Settings menu in VRChat.
    • Make sure your Microphone Level slider is turned all the way up.
  4. Select the Correct Recording Device
    • In the VRChat Settings menu, verify that the correct microphone is selected.
    • If unsure, try switching between available devices until your mic works.
  5. Adjust Microphone Levels in Windows
    • Right-click the speaker icon in your taskbar > Sound Settings > Recording Devices.
    • Double-click your active microphone.
    • Enable Listen to this device (temporarily) to test your input.
    • Set Microphone Level to 100 and Microphone Boost to +30dB.
    • If you hear yourself clearly, that confirms your mic is functioning.
    • Don’t forget to uncheck “Listen to this device” afterward.
  6. Try a Different Microphone
    • If you’re using a USB microphone or headset, try switching to another device.
    • Some USB audio devices can have compatibility issues with VRChat.
  7. Check for Conflicts with Other Apps
    • If you use voice applications such as Discord, make sure they are not running in Administrator Mode, as this can interfere with VRChat’s mic access.
  8. Multichannel Input Devices
    • If you use an Audio Interface or other device that records audio on multiple channels, only the first channel (usually the Left channel) will be picked up in VRChat. Make sure to account for this when setting up your audio devices.

VRChat Mobile (iOS & Android)

  1. Check the Microphone Button
    • Tap the microphone icon on your screen to mute or unmute yourself.
    • If the microphone icon is crossed out, you're muted.
  2. Understand the Icon Colors
    • White: No audio is detected.
    • Red: Audio is detected, but your voice isn’t being broadcast.
    • Blue: Audio is detected and broadcasting correctly.
  3. Verify Push-to-Talk Mode
    • By default, VRChat uses Push-to-Talk (PTT) mode. Hold the microphone icon to talk, and release it to stop.
    • To change this behavior, go to Settings > Microphone Mode and select one of the following:
      • Toggle: Tap once to turn the mic on or off.
      • Always On: Your mic stays active (recommended only when using headphones).
  4. Check Microphone Permissions
    • Make sure the VRChat Mobile app has permission to use your microphone.
