The TAKE IT DOWN Act (Public Law 119-6) is a federal law designed to protect individuals from the nonconsensual online publication of intimate visual depictions, including AI-generated deepfake images, by requiring prompt removal.
What kinds of images are covered?
- Authentic intimate images: Pictures or videos showing nudity or sexually explicit conduct of an identifiable person.
- Digital forgeries (deepfakes): Computer-generated or altered intimate images that look real but are not authentic.
- Applies to both adults and minors
What should I do?
If you discover an intimate visual depiction of yourself published without your consent, you can request removal through VRChat's Help Desk.
- Submit a Request through the Help Desk
- Select Moderation Report/Appeal
- Select "I want to file a report" under the "Moderation Category"
- Select “Account Report” under "I want to file"
- Scroll down to select "TAKE IT DOWN Act (Compliance)"
- Please provide as much information as possible.
What happens after you report?
Once we receive a valid removal request, we are required by law to:
- VRChat will make reasonable efforts to identify and remove any identical copies of the image on the platform in a timely manner
What if you are a minor or the image involves a minor?
The law provides additional protections for images involving minors. If you are a minor or represent a minor, please notify us immediately so we can prioritize removal and help protect the minor's safety.
