Finding an avatar that feels right for you is a core part of the VRChat experience. Your avatar isn’t just how others see you – it’s also how you express yourself.
Choosing the right avatar isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s about how you feel using it. Finding the perfect fit is often a personal journey that involves some trial and error.
While there are a few ways to find an avatar, here are a few that we suggest:
🛒 Using the Avatar Marketplace
The VRChat Avatar Marketplace is the easiest way to find an avatar.
Accessing the Avatar Marketplace is easy. Simply open up the Main Menu and click on the Avatars tab. You will automatically be brought to the Explore tab. Here, you can find all the avatars currently available in the Avatar Marketplace.
You will see they are categorized by style: if you’re trying to find an anime avatar or a furry avatar, for example, you’ll see them grouped by Category. There are plenty of other categories you can browse through.
With the Avatar Marketplace, you can try on any avatar, no matter where you are! This way, you can make sure it suits you (and don’t forget to look at the expressions menu, as many avatars have customization options tucked in there!). If you are a VR user, you can see how it feels and how it matches your proportions.
Once you’ve found an avatar on the Marketplace that you like, you can choose to purchase it with VRChat Credits.
🌐 Searching Avatar Worlds
Throughout VRChat, there are many avatar worlds. These VRChat worlds contain multiple avatars, usually accessible via “avatar pedestals.” Avatar pedestals display a preview of the avatar (typically a 2D image) that you can then click on, transforming you into that avatar.
Some of these avatar worlds feature different systems for browsing through their avatars.
You can search for avatar worlds by going to the Main Menu, navigating to Worlds, and then clicking the Search icon at the top. Often, you can find them simply by typing “avatar” and a specific style. For example, “anime avatar,” “furry avatar,” “robot avatar,” or something similar. Try searching for terms that resonate with you alongside the word avatar!
📦 Purchasing an Avatar Outside of VRChat
If you can't find something that fits you within VRChat, you can always find something on an external marketplace and upload it to VRChat!
This process is typically more involved and requires learning to use Unity. It also might require learning additional creator tools, depending on the avatar you purchase. Likewise, because you’ve purchased the avatar outside of VRChat’s Marketplace, you can’t be assured that it will work out of the box – sometimes avatars require tweaking, or may require updating later on.
You also won’t be able to try on the avatars you’re browsing through. You will simply have to hope the images provided give you a good idea of how the avatar will fit you in VRChat.

While we cannot verify the authenticity or provide any support for avatars purchased on them, many users find websites like Booth.pm or Gumroad helpful for purchasing avatars.
🧰 Creating Your Own Custom Avatar
Still can’t find something you’d like? You can always build something yourself!
For some, this will mean finding an avatar they like on an external platform, purchasing it, downloading it, and then customizing it before uploading it by using Unity. For others, it will mean completely modeling and texturing an avatar (and clothing!) from scratch by using tools like Blender and Substance Painter.
This can be a complicated process! With that said, many users find it to be extremely rewarding, and it can be a pathway towards building avatars to sell to others.
